Welcome to the Streets Ahead Cycle Campaign Conference website

12th November 2005, The Gateway Centre, Warrington, WA1 1SR

9:30 am to 4:30 pm

Update 18th Nov :

Thank you to everyone who attended the conference and made it a success.

Warrington Cycle Campaign is very pleased to have been involved with the conference.

Comments in feedback made  by delegates were :-

Overall

"you've set the standard for other CCN/CTC conferences"

"One of the best. Venue good for 'networking' with the fluidity of one big open space."

"Very much appreciate the efforts and enormously valued the conference. Many, many thanks. "

"well done for a brilliant conference"

"Worth getting up at four am to get there!"

"Superb conference! Well done."

"Congratulations to the yellow sweat shirted Warrington Cyclists on organising such a wonderful event - and for only £12. Worth hundreds in giving me hope for a better cycling future for myself, my children and my country. "

"Thanks for a great, well organised day."

"One of the best so far ! Thanks"

"One of the best conferences I have ever attended"

"A well organised conference."

"it was worth the journey, particularly pleased to hear about 20is plenty campaign"

"I found the event very enjoyable, interesting and thought provoking."

Presentations

"One of the Best Bike Conferences I have attended."

"Conference at its most incisive when it remained cycling specific. In that respect superb"

"Rod's was really compelling."

"I have to say that Rod's presentation was one of the most significant (and technically excellent) I have ever attended. Also extra stars awarded for Lutz and Tom"

"Generally v. good or excellent. Rod's presentation stunned the audience - shock tactics worked very well, ideal for showing to those who don't support traffic calming measures. "

"Informative & thought provoking. Time to re-evaluate our local campaigning?"

"Being a student who is used to lectures of at least 50 minutes, I very much appreciated the length of the talks. I felt they covered a wide range of topics in relation to cycling and found them very useful. Furthermore, despite being an experienced cyclist they have changed my opinions somewhat in a more favourable direction."

"had general sense of latest policy trends and govt. attitudes - good."

"I thought all the presentations were very good. "

"Not enough time was given over to CTC/CCN issues. As this is one of the few occasions when RTR reps get a chance to talk to CTC campaign people at least an hour should be given over to this at each conference. Dave Holladay for example should get the chance to report on bikes and public transport rather than have to raise the issue during questions. "

"Excellent range of topics, one too many for the time available - I would have dropped Think Big:Think Bike to allow more time for questions and discussion. Chair Chris did well in limiting most to one question during the course of the day. Highlights were John Adams and Rod King. The latter deserved a standing ovation. He brilliantly described the neurotic way our society treats children, creating false perceptions of danger and deference to motor traffic. I will read it to my 2 year old daughters and their over anxious mother. Stand for Parliament Rod!"

"Fabulous topics and a huge help for my presentation to our city council scrutiny panel on cycling. I felt it was a shame that some fine presentations did not have long enough."

"CTC was rushed"

"sorry, missed the last talk! Excellent choice and focus."

"overall a very good programme from which I learned a lot"

"Would have liked the event to last a bit longer, with a little more time for most presentations and questions. Roger Geffen in particular should definitely have had more time; his were the "ACTION POINTS" we need to deliver on, after all! "

Venue and Food

"Food fantastic. What value for £15! Venue fine. Stands/posters a bit sparse? "

"Registration slow at times - names not in alphabetical
Venue a bit chilly"

"excellent selection of tasty food and drink - staff / volunteers serving all very friendly"

"Map in booklet & Bus Station conflict!"

"best food I have had at a CTC/CNN conference"

"there was a lot of unrecyclable waste generated which was shame - I would think risk of theft or cutlery/crockery would be low"

"Efficient and friendly"

"A Brilliant Venue"

"Excellent"

"Truly excellent venue & admin, food was yummy & loads of it - thanks"

"Conference very satisfactory but difficult to hear contributions at lunchtime CCN meeting venue on mezzanine (not your fault)"

"A good venue with excellent food."

"Regarding finding the venue, I had a little bit of difficulty with the printout, especially getting my orientation from the train station. I thought both the provision of food and the quality was excellent."

Booking

"I experienced difficulties paying for the conference online, however I didn't mind sending a cheque in the post."

"on line payment was unbelievably time consuming and ultimately futile."

"I had problems with Paypal!"

"Very efficient"

"Tried and failed to pay by credit card on line so sent a cheque"

"I had impression booklet would come earlier and actually enquired just before it arrived by email"

"Pay pal was difficult"

"payment via the web site didn't work for me so I have to mark it down."

"I encountered a gremlin but free entry to the Irish eased the pain"

"All good"

"Efficient"

"this was done brilliantly"

"Good, professional job."

Average scores from delegate feedback for conference were based on scores from 1 to 5, where 1 was unsatisfactory, 3 as expected and 5 excellent.

Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback.

We are particularly pleased that EVERY aspect of the conference and EVERY presentation was on average judged better than expected, and most were between "Better than expected" and "Excellent".

Some comments from the organisers :-

We wanted to enable the payment by credit card as this was most convenient for many people. We chose PayPal because there was no setup fee. We did experience some problems which may have been temporary in nature. Many did successfully use it, but many had problems. Note that Paypal payment was an option rather than a requirement.

We wanted to put cycling in a broader context. Cycling was therefore examined as part of wider transport options. We believe that this puts cycling into the mainstream and avoids marginalisation. This was therefore reflected in our choice of presentations.

Getting sponsorship was very important as it enabled us to hire proper conference AV equipment and do many things better. Our thanks to Urban Engineering, Serco, Warrington Borough Council and other sponsors for their help

We wanted to put on a conference that was as relevent, professional, informative, innovative and successful for all delegates. It took a lot of hard work, many "pints" of planning, much head scratching and thousands of e-mails. It was definitely worthwhile and we trust that our efforts have enabled us all to be more effective.

We know that we made a few mistakes as amateurs often do. Any campaigns hosting future conferences are welcome to contact us to find out what worked well and what didn't.

Thank you to all the presenters and conference delegates for enabling us to put on such a well received conference.

Best wishes

Rod King, Chris Mayes, and everyone at Warrington Cycle Campaign.
